Pop to the Shops gives young children the chance to practise shopping and buying items costing mainly within £1. Children love acting out the various shopkeepers in Pop to the Shops and receiving money for their goods. The aim in Pop to the Shops is to be the first person to buy six items before running out of money.

Each time your child plays 'Pop to the Shops' they will be getting a chance to handle money and count out various amounts. While money is widely recognised as an essential real-life skill, all of the recent research shows that many children rarely get a chance to handle money. You can rectify this very easily by playing this extremely popular game with your child. I would also suggest that you use real money so that your child does get the opportunity to become familiar with each of the coins.

Pop to the Shops has the added advantage of helping your child count in 10s, 20s and 50s: all of these are part of counting sequences that your child will be expected to do in Number activities.

To enhance the game even further, introduce the use of 5p and and possibly 2p coins as this will provide a more realistic shopping experience and give even more reinforcement of counting in various amounts.
