An abacus offers much more than basic counting in ones!

Children learn through repetition and they learn to count through constant reinforcement of a counting sequence. The more ways they experience numbers, the greater chance they have to build a secure understanding of them. Initially use the counting frame to help your child count forward in ones while moving the appropriate beads. Once they have grasped this, help them to learn the sequence when counting backwards in ones.
Extend this by using each bead to represent 2, 5 or 10 to help your child count out these sequences: again, begin by counting forwards in 2's, for example, and keep at this until they are really competent and confident. Once your child knows this counting sequence, you can then help them with counting backwards in the same steps.

You can also use it for illustrating addition or subtraction of Tens and Units sums.
